Installed in: Salter Point, 6152
Townhouse living in Salter Point often means making every square metre count. This home has a small courtyard boxed in by two-storey walls, plus long, narrow side passages running down each side of the house. Both soaked up the sun through the middle of the day, and there was nowhere to sit in the courtyard without copping the full heat.
A motorised Folding Arm Awning now shades the courtyard. Mounted high on the wall, it extends almost 3.9m wide with a 3m projection, covering most of the paved area when it’s out. It runs on a motor with a remote, and a motion sensor automatically retracts the awning if the wind picks up. When it’s not needed, it folds back into its cassette and leaves the courtyard open to the sky.
Along the side passages, three Roof to Fence Blinds run from the eaves across to the boundary fence, the longest stretching 6m. Crank operated and simple to use, they take the edge off the sun along the walkways and help protect the pot plants and garden beds lining the fence. Both the awning and the blinds are made up in Visiontex® mesh in a warm sand tone that sits nicely against the cream brickwork.
The result is a townhouse that now has usable, shaded outdoor space on every side. The courtyard has become a comfortable spot to sit, and the passages are cooler and more pleasant to move through.
For a compact block like this one, Roof to Fence Blinds and a Folding Arm Awning can help:
- Shade small courtyards and narrow side passages that get the full sun
- Retract the awning at the touch of a button when the sky is wanted
- Automatically pull the awning in when the wind picks up
- Keep walkways cooler and protect pot plants and garden beds
- Let air and light through the mesh so tight spaces don’t feel closed in
- Make the most of every outdoor area on a smaller block
